Hi Reed,
It’s so uplifting to read about (and hear directly from) so many people who are struggling, yet have such positive outlooks. Anthony (day 67) seems like the perfect example of this, and I’d love to help him out a bit. Please let him know that his size 9 sneakers are on the way!
All the best,
Maureen
Awesome! I know Anthony will appreciate it. In fact I saw him yesterday. I will send you details on how to get the shoes to him. Thank you so much!
Hi Reed,
As many people are reading your site, I am inspired. I would love to help Anthony Day 67 out. I would like to send him a backpack, underwear or some pants if he is still in need of these things. I wish I were able to do more but if you don’t mind letting me know what he is still in need of and maybe an address I can mail it to so he will get it. Thank you!
Jamie M.
Hi Jamie, I will send you an email with details. -Reed

Hi Reed – Just heard about your effort on NPR. I love it! I will take #17 and #18. I’d be happy to send Gregory C. a full outfit if you can find out his sizes for shoes and shirts.
Thanks for making it easy for us to help others.
Teri
This is wonderful!!! I will email you directly to coordinate this. Thanks Teri!!!
I just read the Wash Post article about the wonderful things you are doing. It was very uplifting as I was recently laid off and totally agree with your mother that this is the best time to focus my attention on others as my situation is not as bad is it feels.
Keep paying it forward!
Meka
I’m glad you have enjoyed the Year of Giving! Hang in there. I have found LinkedIn very helpful. If you have not checked it out, I encourage you to do so.
Hi Reed,
I saw your article on the Washington Post and wanted to thank you for what you’re doing. And thanks for having this blog up with a list of what is needed.
If #9 (Cleo’s request for a music stand) has not been taken, I’d like to help. Is there a particular music stand that Cleo needs? Even better, if there’s an address where I can have the stand shipped that’d be great.
Thank you again for what you’re doing — will be checking here often!
That is so kind of you. I will check with Cleo and email you directly next week. He will be so happy! He is amazing.
Hi Reed,
Thank you so much for the reply! Will be eagerly waiting for the information. 🙂
And please keep up the fantastic work! Reading through the blog entries and they are just amazing. Some of the posts made me smile and others I just wanted to cry.
It just brings to mind a quote a old homeless veteran once said to me when I bought him lunch and some cake slices from an office party. When he asked me how I could repay him (thought that was an odd question), I just asked if he had a word of wisdom to give to a youngster.
This was his advice: “If humans are meant to be addicted to something, do make sure it’s kindness.”
I’m not sure if he’s still around, but if he is, think he’ll be thrilled to hear you’re practicing his advice.
Hi Reed, the Washington Post had an article on you today. My mom is going through the Social Security Disability process and I can tell you that Nikki G. (14) can help with Social Security Disability from any SS lawyer or from a private sector lawyer. If a lawyer decides to ‘take her case,’ they will charge up to 25% of any back payment check that she receives from the system (this 25% cap is stipulated by law). If she does not win her disability claim, the lawyer gets nothing. If she is applying for other types of disability, there are many free law clinics to low income people. Try google. I hope this helps.
Thanks for this information…I will definitely pass it along to Nikki.
Miranda is correct. I have finally gotten my disability and I couldn’t have done it without a lawyer. There are no upfront or consultation fees and it works exactly as Miranda says. Please tell Nikki G (#14) to find a lawyer that specializes in Social Security Disability and he will get the ball rolling. It isn’t a quick process…it took me about 3 years to get it done, because most people are denied and then have to go through a hearing like I did.
My lawyer also suggested that I contact one of my senators or congressmen as they also help to speed up the process. I did this and it really helped. If I had known earlier about this, I would have done it sooner.
The first thing Nikki needs to do is to go to social security and file for disability benefits and then she should find a lawyer.
I wish her the best of luck!
Dear Reed,
I have been battling for two years now with a large insurance carrier for my long term disability benefits and also had to apply and subsequently go up to the administrative law judge hearing level, to obtain social security benefits. I won my trial, on my own, without legal representation.
I don’t know if anything I know can help, but I would love to help Nikki with her paperwork, if I can.
Please pass along my email address to her, or please give me her contact information.
You are so amazing and inspirational. I am going to derive much enjoyment and a sense of good in this world by reading your blog. I too believe in consistent giving and paying it forward everyday.
With sincere thanks for brightening my day,
Erin
I am hoping to see Nikki this week and let her know about you and some others that have offered advice. Thanks Erin. This is so kind of you!
Also Georgetown Law school and Howard Law school all have programs that help low income families with housing issues as well
God Bless you Reed for seeing a need and filling it! May He bless you indeed, and enlarge your territory. May His hand be with you and keep you from tempatation so as not to cause pain. And the Lord answered the request. 1 Chronicles 4:9 (para)
Reed,
read your article in today’s Washington Post. What you’re doing is inspiring and kind. My husband and I would like to contribute to Gregory C. and Phillip B.’s wardrobes. Please let me know what the best way would be to get clothes to them.
Thank you and keep brightening others’ days!
Tunde
Hi Reed. My co-worker Bobbi sent me the link to your Wash. Post article… she grew up with you and Ryan. I am going to order Gregory C (day 71) a few pair of Dockers pants… please let me know where I can have them delivered. thanks! and what you are doing is fantastic!
Crissy! You are wonderful! Thank you so much! Gregory is going to be so excited. I will contact you with details of getting Gregory the pants!
We need more articles that illustrate human kindness , like this one, for maybe they could become contagious, Of course after all the reporting about Congress, it is needed more than ever before!
All of us have been helped by others who we could not pay back at the time. Now to “pass it on” to another would be most welcomed…
Hello Reed,
Just read the article in the Washington Post about your Year of Giving. What a wonderful idea! I have been struggling financially for the past several years, being employed in the real estate industry in Prince William County, VA, where the values have plummeted and foreclosures have skyrocketed. “Paying it forward” by practicing kindness and thoughtfulness consistently has helped me stay one step ahead of depression … until I am able to find a better job that will put me back on the road to financial recovery…
Thank you for your WONDERFUL work! Your act of kindness quite possibly could have saved many lives …
We all need to learn from this just how much one act can mean to someone.
Is there anything I can do to help?
I believe in attacking issues from a creative angle…so I am open to any creative ideas you have. Write me at reed@yearofgiving.org and let me know a little more about you so I can figure out how you can help…or if you are interested in helping out a specific person from the blog, I can brainstorm that with you. Thanks!
I agree Reed has saved many lives because, following his lead has increased my giving and reason for living: others.
Hi Reed, this doesn’t surprise me one bit! I always knew you “were not no Owen Musser!!!” You are wonderful; keep your good works growin’! Hope to see you soon.
Love, Laurie Freed
Nikki G. (#14, Day 66) should go to the DC Bar Advice and Referral Clinic: Open to the general public, the clinic is sponsored by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program and held on the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. You do not need an appointment to meet with an attorney, but you must arrive by noon. More info is available at http://www.dcbar.org/for_the_public/programs_and_services/advice.cfm
Also, the DC Bar has a program called the Advocacy and Justice Clinic that has a whole bunch of “big law” attorneys who do Social Security claims pro bono. Some info and a list of the big name firms who do this:
About the Clinic
The Pro Bono Program Advocacy & Justice Clinic is a partnership with legal service providers and many of the District’s largest law firms and government agencies. The Clinic strives to provide representation to clients on a range of civil legal problems. Almost 300 cases were placed last year.

This is fantastic information! Thank you Cindy!!!
This is awesome information I only wish I had been able to read your post sooner. I took the drug Vioxx twice daily over 2 yrs and developed heart disease & other health conditions. The Vioxx trust administrator told me I did not need an attorney and that only persons that suffered a heart attack would be considered for payment. As soon as I found out the settlement was considering all Vioxx recipents even reimbursement for the prescriptions I or my insurance had paid, I called the trust administrator who for one yr continued to say they had extended the settlement but I did not need to contact an attorney.
Then one day I suddenly receive a letter stating my case would not be considered for any settlement payment. I was devasted since my daughter had taken care of me for yrs from Vioxx releated damage to my heart. I even had to resign from the best job of my life. Now that I am on SSI I have no recourse. I said, “Why didn’t the settlement alert me of this sooner than one month before it ended the class action suit. Because I had contacted the Goldberg Law Group online. They even gave me a case number, when I told the trust administor Diane Blackmon she said, the class action is only considering case of an actual heart attack. I said, I was hospitalized in ICU for heart issues relating to something I was taking but had no know of a problem with Vioxx, my doctor never told me it had been pulled. The pharmacist did when I asked why I could get my pain medication. This was a terrible injustice because I’m a single mother who at the time was a minor. I had to go food stamps etc. But I know your readers would have greatly informed me of what I need to do Reed.
I have only came back to life since following Reed’s program to me it is a life line to God. It so good to be needed and giving small amounts has blessed my daughter and my own life. I always felt I could give little money, I was waiting on the day to do big thing for people. Now I find something and some to make smile each day. You will be amazed at how $10 or 3 dollars brings tears to people lives. Especially aging people. There life stories so give me hope for the next morning. Thanks Everybody reading this. Oh and I tell everybody to read about the Year of Giving.
heard the npr story and saw todays piece in the post. love you and your idea. am wondering if you’ve thought of marking the bills in some way, like “year of giving – pass it on.” or “yearofgiving.wordpress.com” it’d help spread the word, plus it would be fun to see how they filter around. regards,
mimi
Hi Mimi…yes, I did think of this. A quick Internet search said that it was technically illegal to do…so I didn’t think much about it. I thought about putting it in a clear sleeve with the YoG info on it and ask people to keep it in there…but that didn’t seem practical…if you have any more info on this or thoughts I would be interested to learn. I would love to be able to truly follow the money some how!
I think you could mark the money – I believe the law reads that you may not mark the money in a way that renders it unusable. There is a website that I used to be active on all the time called Where’s George – http://www.wheresgeorge.com . The idea was that you enter the serial number of your paper money, put the website on the bill, and then spend it, hoping that some future recipient would enter it back into the site. People don’t always re-enter it but it certainly couldn’t hurt to try – you could set up an account specifically for this project and mark your bill “Year of Giving” along with the WG address and put your project info and a link back here in your profile. Hope this helps & good luck!! This is a fantastic undertaking on your part.
I love what youre doing with this, and think it is such a great idea. And one teacher I had once told me it is not illegal to write on the boarder of a dollar bill. I’m not sure if that is still true today, but I just remember him once saying that. Hopefully it helps!
I heard your story on WAMU less than an hour ago. It was so uplifting — amid all the bad news, here you are turning your unemployment into an opportunity to make a difference in the world. Inspiring! When you mentioned that you started this project on the anniversary of your mother’s death, to honor her memory, it really struck a chord with me. Coincidentally, today is the anniversary of my mother’s death. She was an incredibly generous, altruistic person, and she would have loved your story. In her honor, and in your mother’s honor, I plan to fulfill one of the items on your Lend a Hand list (I just have to figure out which one!). Thank you for being a shining beacon of light!
~Mary
I loved your article! Another way people can give that they underestimate is giving their time. Experience Corps (www.experiencecorps.org) is a national organization in 22 cities where adults age 55 and over can tutor and mentor the neediest kids. My dad’s friend is an Experience Corps tutor – he gives like you every day.
Laura, what a great resource. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Reed, what you are doing is so inspirational. I am so glad I saw the Wash Post article today. I will be back to read more and figure out how I can best help.
Reed,
This is such an interesting project! I’m so glad you are getting attention and sharing your work.
It seems like you are passing on great advice about the emergency/short term shelter options to some of the people you are meeting. I would just mention a small and wonderful, organization that I’ve gotten to know–Pathways to Housing DC. They provide housing first to people who are chronically homeless and mentally ill. Once people are given a safe space of their own they provide the support for the residents to tackle things like addiction and taking their medications. It may be a good organization for you to know about as you do your great work.
I look forward to following you for the rest of your journey. Hopefully I can find a way to lend a hand at some point.
And, good luck with your personal job search. I hope this is a very fulfilling piece of each day.
Best,
Natalie
I cannot begin to say how your story touched my heart. My Dad, who passed away when I was nine; always told me that no matter how bad you think you have it, somebody else has it worse and you can always help. My friends make fun of me and call me a softie when I give money to the homeless, but Jesus said,” As you do for the poor, you do for me.” Thank you Reed, good luck with the job hunt. Trust me, I’m in the same boat.
You know I read your article on yahoo today, and decided to visit your site. It brought tears to my eyes to know how selfish I have been in my days. I concern myself with meaningless arguments with my students and fight with the family over problems like what’s for dinner and who’s going to cook it. I realize that there are bigger problems in the world that need to be addressed, even something as simple as getting a job, which should be easy for everyone, is a daily chore that is taking months even years for some to accomplish, and in the process they are lossing everything they’ve ever had, little by little. In this day and age this should be unacceptable to everyone, and when we have family out there we should all help one another even when it might inconvience one another. Thank you for what you do, I can only hope to become a better man based on what you have taught me.
Very touching comment Pete. We all feel that way from time to time. Start today to make a conscious decision to do something kind for someone else every day. And remember…a lot of stuff is small stuff…just let that stuff go.
I found your article and I think its awesome. I was wondering if along the way you have encountered ppl who need help with either their kids or their animals. I can help with either or just whatever they need. I live near the DC area so I can get the things to them that they need. I would like to help anyway I can.
Thank you so much for doing what you can when you yourself are struggling.
I have not found many people asking for help with their kids or pets. Please email me directly at reed@yearofgiving.org though and let me know a little more about how you might be able to help. Thanks!
I would love to do a story on you for my school paper. Will you be in the Bloomington/Normal Illinois area anytime in the next few months??
You are awesome! I am so glad that there are people like you that just wish to lend a hand. I applaud all your efforts. And I am waiting to help one of your people as soon as I have something to offer these kind people. Please keep up your kindness.
a beautiful idea….
Wow! It’s so nice to see someone taking time to make a difference in so many lives. If you can send me more info on how to get things to you I would like to send some clothes for Phillip B. I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi Reed. I just want to tell you that you are such an inspiration! I am tears of joy right now! God Bless you! Wanna hear something weird?
I almost handed a homeless man a 10 dollar bill just today as my husband, daughter, and I were arriving into Tampa, Fl. for a gymnastics meet. It was the only 10 dollar bill in our ashtray. As we were getting the money out to give, the man had wandered several cars behind us and we couldn’t hold up traffic. Regretfully, we just went on ahead.
I know now that your story was a sign from God. I will do my best to go back to that spot today and find that man. If not, I will give my $10 to the next person I think will accept it.
God Bless you! You will receive many riches from God for your selfless acts!
P.S. If you ever come to Florida……I am disabled and would like some new legs!
Well, I didn’t find him but right outside my hotel was a homeless man holding a sign that read “homeless collecting for the homeless”. Gave my $10 to him. It felt great! Thank you for showing that there are still so many good people in this world. Have a great day!
YES! Great job Stacey! You made my night.
I hope to get to Florida this year… need to figure out a way to pay for the trip. New legs…that might be a challenge!
Hey! When you do make it to Florida with my new legs, I will be ready! 🙂 Come to my area and I will help pay for your hotel room.
Actually because of your story and how it’s touched me, my husband and I are now tithing our income. Know what “tithe” means…….a TENth! Hmmm…….:0
God Bless you Reed!
P.S. Kidding about the new legs! Not about helping you!
You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others – something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

In this day and age, where almost everyone is most concerned about themselves, it is very refreshing and uplifting to read about stories like this. Congratulations, Sir, on an exceptional service that you are doing. May God continue blessing you and your family in many ways. Be alert to give service. What counts a great deal in life is what we do for others.
hi reed,
i just read your story on yahoo, wow, its amazing to see that the lords hand is still at work in people as your self. the lord says he will bless those that bless his people. people who accept your $10 is a blessing for them and a bigger blessing for you. i know you do this for no compensation and that’s the whole meaning of doing and being nice to others.
am super glad to see that this is helping others and bringing joy to your heart and am sure lots of joy to your mother also. i would love to help you out on this beautiful journey you have started. let me give you a break for a day and allow me to give that some one those $10. i hope you accept my offer and may you continue to be guided by the lords light!
Thanks for the offer Robert…but I have committed the $3,650 for the year. What would be great is for you to give your $10 away and share with us what you did with it. Good luck!
Hi Reed,
I just read about what you are doing and wanted to take a moment to say Thank You! I think it’s a wonderful idea and incredibly uplifting to us who read your blog. I will be sure to check back regularly to see if there is anyone I am able to help. God Bless!
I am glad that there are others out there who see a purpose in helping others. It motivates me to continue dedicating my time, efforts, and money to continue doing the same. I work for a non-organization, found at http://www.seedsforhaiti.org, that is raising fund for the victims that have relocated to the countryside because the aid has yet to follow those people. There main objective is to raise funds for sustainable agriculture that can help sustain them in the long run. Through them I got to visit Haiti in January prior the quake and to experience the quake and the people’s suffering in the aftermath.
hey reed, i am so impressed and overwhelmed by what you are doing. the best part is that you learned this from a woman who had the good sense to teach you something that is so important to making the world a better place, your sweet mother.
I approve of you. I’m currently jobless and with $12 to my name, but as soon as I have the means, I’ll contribute to your project any way I can.
Hang in the Ozzy. Thanks for visiting the Year of Giving!
Reed,
How inspiring your story is and what a big heart you have. My husband and I are both unemployed right now and we know how important it is to give back. I would like to help Gregory C.(Day 71) with some pants. We live in the Chicagoland area so I would have to send them. please provide an address to send them. Thank you for all that you do.
Laura
Hi Reed,
I really appreciate what you are doing. Your so kind.
Hope some people will follow up. Well we can help even if were are poor. There are so many things to help not just money.
Is there anyway where I can contact you directly?
Thanks Leah! Send me mail at reed@yearofgiving.org!
This reminds me of the movie “Pay it Forward” with Kevin Spacey. I don’t make much money at my job in retail ,however, I have found great joy in giving people money just like this for no reason other than to give it. These people are not my friends but something about them or their stories have inspired me to be giving. I struggle to pay bills as a single mom of an autistic child , but I never regret sharing what little I do have with others. I would reccomend not stopping after one year, when you get the job you are hoping to find maybe increase the amount or the number of times per week that you give these strangers a helping hand. I have also found it very humbleing to not tell others of the money I give away. On the one hand I am glad you have put your good deeds out there, so the word can spread and now my suggestion would be to show yourself how it feels to just give without letting the world know. You will probably experience a whole other feeling of peace and kindness.
What an amazing idea!
I just read this story about you on the net and almost had tears in my eyes. Very noble indeed. Come to think of it, in a years worth of time you’d be giving away about $3,650–much less than what the billionaire philanthropists are giving away each year. But I think your way is a much nobler one!
I wish you ALL the success. Perhaps we should all think of something innovative & generous like your idea…?
I my self am a teenager, and do not have a job. If I had any money, I would donate it, but I don’t. Maybe just remind people that even if they don’t have money or items to donate, they have their time. Even just an hour at a soup kitchen, or food pantry. A weekend helping out at the salvation army. Time is just as much a gift as money.
I totally agree. I often say, it’s not about the money.
hey
i read an article about you and what you are doing.
and i just wanna say that what you are doing is amazing and wonderful.
helping others even though you were laid off. your story put a smile to my face. it’s very inspiring as well.
keep what you are doing. (:
it’s people like you that gives hope to many other people. (:
Wow I’m truly inspired by your act of kindness during your difficult time. I too have been unemployed for quite some time and today was one of those days. I clicked on your story and it brought a renewed spirt in me. Thanks for what you are doing for other and thanks for sharing your stories.
Your a good man and in life if one person helped one person no one would need .. God will reward you for all that you do and truly you have been blessed. There are allot of people in need in your own cities. I urge PEOPLE to get involved as you never know it could be you that one day that needs help..
Make everyday count
Reed,
What you are doing is wonderful. My mother is an advocate for doing good deeds in tough times as well, her and I made snacks & lunch for a homeless man by her office every day for about 3 months until he disappeared one day, he was young, older than I am, probably in his late twenties, but so full of life and so optimistic. I hope he found his place in the world. He gave my mom and I hugs every day, we made sure he never went without water (summer months)…
I have been out of work for 4 months but luckily I have found a job in my field and will be starting at the end of April. I hope everything works out for you, and keep doing what you are doing. Your stories brought tears to my eyes and made my day even happier.
Thank you.
Reed-
What an AMAZING idea! I know someone is helping Phillip B. (18) already, but I’d like to send him some items as well! Please let me know sizing info and where to send it to.
Thanks for the inspiration =)
-Jessa
Jess, I am hoping to meet up with him this week and will be back in touch with what else he needs. He is pretty great. Thanks!
I would like to help someone that has children. I am a mom and a foster mom and just love the kids. Please let me know if there is a small token that I can do for someone!
Thanks for what you are doing!
HI WAS WRITING TO LET U KNOW THAT GOD HAS A ESPECIAL PLACE FOR YOU IN HEAVEN WHAT U R DOING IS A SMALL BUT BIG GESTURE I ADMIRE U A LOT PLUS GAME A GOOD IDEAL OF HOW TO HELP OTHERS I BEEN THINKING OF A WAY N U SHOW ME GOD BLESS U FOR WHAT U R DOING FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE IS SO WONDERFUL I WILL LOVE TO SEE THERE FACES IT MUST BE SO NICE TO WOUNDER THERE THOUGHTS BUT GOD IS WATCHING ALL THERE EXPRESSION
I’m a college student and looking over the list I saw that Cleo needed a music stand but then I see that someone else wanted to help with the music stand…
So is there any kind of sheet music that Cleo might like?
Or maybe a metronome, (can’t spell, but its a electronic device that sets a tempo for musicians)
I wish I could afford to help all of those on the list, but right now until I graduate in 4 years this is the best I can do.
You mentioned John D wanting some conversation, if he has access to the internet I would be more than happy to chat with him via email
That is so nice of you! I am supposed to check in with Cleo this week, so I hope to get back to you on him. John says he doesn’t use email unfortunately.
Well the other thing would be to send letters or cards and since Im like more than a few states away, safety wouldn’t be a concern for me, but I am not sure how someone else would feel about writing to a total stranger
Discuss this with John and let me know?
Otherwise I can alsways send cards ever month or so, just to brighten his day…
Also I would like your permission to post your website around our campus so other students can come here and maybe help out as well
That is an idea. I will try to check with him in the coming days to see if he has a mailing address that he uses. If not, I can receive mail for him.
You are more than welcome to post the website around your campus! Thanks for sharing my project and helping insipire others!
Hi Reed,
I think you are doing a great thing by what you are doing. i am not sure where i can go to read your blogs. i am also unemployed. got laid off from my last two jobs and then they closed their doors couple weeks later. i am now in college to get a degree to better my life. i dont have much but when someone ask me for help i try to help them out as much as i can. i never ask for the money back. i figured they need it more then i do.
Keep up the good work and God bless you with everything you do.
I promise you that someone like you is making a huge difference. Many years ago in the grocery store is was trying to decide what to put back becuse I didn’t have enough money. A wonderful man stepped up and payed the $12 I didn’t have and when I asked him how I could repay him he told me to help someone else. I have been doing so for many years. Even now when where struggling I grab my coupons and sales flyers get the best bargains and donate at least 2 paper bags of food and toiletries to my small local food bank. I donate more when I can and I do small things for individuals. People can help anyone in the the smallest way makes a big difference. I’ve given an extra pack of baby wipes to a new mother, given someone small change to help pay for something and bought an extra sandwich for someone and there always grateful and all I ever ask is the do something for someone else. I help many people in many ways thanks to a wonderful person like you. Keep up the good work your a wonderful person.
Reed, what a beautiful thing you are doing! I hope that millions of people will learn of your experience and they will try to do imitate your kindness and generosity.
Money is, after all, nothing but paper. Living life and creating happiness and memories with others is remembered far longer than how much money you make in your lifetime.
As a single parent of three, I have found that Time is a valuable commodity as well. I like to take the time to get to know someone. It costs nothing to talk to the person next to you. Compliment someone on their clothing, or their hairstyle. Looking for opportunities to assist is fun. I like to bring people’s grocery carts back into the store for them when I am heading in myself. It’s practically painless for me, and people are grateful-especially if they have a child with them or it’s raining. Elderly often need assistance-offer to load groceries for them.
I don’t live near you (I’m in Buffalo, NY) or I would love to spend some time talking to you, and some of your recipients. Poverty can make you awfully lonely and depressed. You don’t get much free time to enjoy when you have to fight to survive another day. And human contact can mean so much-no matter what your income is.
May your God bless you and yours! You seem like you have a wonderful soul. I hope you will inspire others to open up their hearts as well. Enjoy your life and have fun-life is too short to do otherwise!
I hope someday your story will not be regarded as a phenomenon, but as commonplace because so many others choose generosity as well. I was wondering, what effects have you noticed directly affecting your Year of Giving since the media have picked up on your story? What are the pros and cons of the noteriety? Thank you so much for your time, I will enjoy telling others of what you are doing. Take care.
I just read an article about this on yahoo news. I’m really glad to see this! I would love to help! I’ll keep checking this to see what I can do for someone. Thanks for posting for those people. I’ll probably be able to spare more cash over the summer when I start working again but, if I see anything doable before that I’ll let you know.
Reed…..you just made my situation so bad! This world needs a whole lot more of you!
Keep on Keepin’ on!
I am so inspired by your story. I heard about you on NPR and now in today’s Post. I am a college teacher and am going to share your story with my many students. I hope they will be inspired, as I am.
About a year ago, I started giving away $20 a week in one-dollar bills, on street corners, in DC. Not as much as you, but I get a kick out of doing it. I keep an eye out for those that appear to obviously need it…people on benches, pushing shopping carts, etc.
I love the way you did it and I know you will be blessed many-fold.
Thank you.
Hi Reed, just saw the Washington Post article, I’ve spent the last hour reading your blog’s. Very touching, I got choked up on a couple. You’re a very kind person.
I’m a D1 collegiate athlete, and full-time student. My life seems to be on the brighter side than some of the others here. I was wondering if there is a PayPal account or a bank account I can donate some money to?
I’d really like to help someone out.
Hi Brad…thanks for the interest in the Year of Giving. I am trying to work out a way to put people’s donations to good use. For now, if you want to donate money or items to any one specific, I can probably make that happen. Just email me directly and let me know who you would like to help out.
I just read your story. I’m not sure how religious you are, but I truly believe in my heart that God will bless you for your kindness. I know it may seem tough and as if it may feel unnoticed on this earth, but the Heavenly Father notices everything. May God continue to touch your kind and giving heart, so that it will touch and teach others to do the same. God bless you!!!
I am…. inspired.
This made me smile. I wish I lived in DC so I could meet John in the pink hat and strike up a conversation, but there are plenty of people in Atlanta probably looking for the same thing, so I’ll start here.
Hi Reed,
I was reading the article in the WP and had to come over to take a look at your blog. I think what you are doing as AMAZING!
I may be able to help Dana (day 33) find some work to help fill in the gaps. Please email me directly so we can chat about.
Thanks!
Thanks Vicky, I will follow up with you via email.
Reed – your work and your heart are amazing! Saw the article in Yahoo! headlines and had to respond.
I was just discussing “the state of America” tonight with my mom and while we didn’t agree on much, we did agree that Americans need to get back to basics and figure out who we are as a country, we need to figure out what we stand for and how we fit into the broader world, and how we want to take care of each other, to lift each other up.
And, here you are, taking action on these things. One man teaching us what it’s all about… giving of oneself to those in need, putting a smile on a stranger’s face (and maybe in their heart), being more engaged in society and less engaged in oneself, standing up for what you believe in.
Thank you … your giving is probably going to have bigger implications than you imagined it could!!
I live in CA, so I’m not sure the best way to help. Would love to send clothing or shoes to those who still need it. Or, how about you? Is there a way my family can support you and your efforts specifically?
Thanks again for all you’re doing.
God bless,
April
April, thanks for your heartfelt message. I agree…we need to do. We need to act. Things don’t just happen…they happen because someone does something. As for helping others, I will keep you in mind and please keep checking the Lend a Hand section, I will be adding new things. I encourage you to write me directly at reed@yearofgiving.org and we will come up with a way that you can help.
April, Nice message!
it sounds like to me that you could help most by giving in CA. You don’t have to do it the way Reed has ($10/day), but find a way to do something where you live. I think he’d like most to see this spirit of giving spread.
You make me smile! I love what you’re doing and the money that you need to continue this and to live on, will come somehow. I’m hoping people will continue to follow your site and help those that they can help. Do you have a paypal account that I would be able to send you $10 to pass on?
Everyday you are someones angel. What a cool thing to be!
Hi Maria…thanks for your kind thoughts. I do have a paypal account; however, I am not accepting money for the $3,650 that I have committed to giving. Many people have offered to help. I am trying to figure out productive use of the funds of generous people like yourself. I will be in touch when I have that figured out!
Reed,
I am not in your area but I love your idea. We have our own thing here me and my daughters. We save any and all clothing that we can and we find families in need. When a need arises they come into our home and they can “shop” for clothing. We also do food. We have helped so many families and we feel blessed. We do at times help financially but it is not alway possible but we try. Wish we could do it on a grander scale. We are trying to get more people involved. So glad to see others doing the same.
God Bless and keep up what you are doing.
That is great Julia…I congratulate you on such a thoughtful way you help your community. I have heard of something similar a while back…not sure if it was you. Keep it up…
Reed think what you are doing is great .I usally dont read the news because it is always bad news so it was good to finally read some news that was good ..its like you give people hope which is what everybody could use right now
I would like to help, but I live half-way across the country. Any suggestions for me? I do what I can to help people in my own community, but having recently been in your part of the world, I’ve seen it first hand and would like to help in some small way. I have a minimum wage job, but I wouldn’t have it without the kindness of someone else.
Hi Rachael, thanks for your kind note. I suggest you find some way to help your community. It doesn’t need to be money. Perhaps you can help tutor a child, volunteer once a month at a retirement home, etc. Send me an email to reed@yearofgiving.org and I would be happy to explore this more with you. If I understand a little more about your skills and background I am sure we can come up with something. Thanks again!
Reed,
Just read about your year of giving. Very uplifting journey you are on. I have given money to homeless people several times in my life and I have overheard my teenage daughter tell a friend how inspired it made her feel. In honor of your mission I plan to take my wife and children out every weekend and find someone to give $20 to. We live in a large town in Georgia with many needy people so I know it won’t be hard to do. I hope that anyone who reads your story feels compelled to do something to spread the giving. Thank you for the inspiration and good luck in your life.
Don
Don that is beautiful. I think your idea is fantastic and what a great way to teach your children the spirit of giving. Please come back and tell us how it is going, ok?
hi reed, as im sitting here reading ur story and all i can do is cry here i am a 36 year old woman mother of seven thinking about the day that i myself am able to help others but like urself im also unemployed so i know how hard it is for u to be doing what u r doing because its hard for me to even feed my children in these trying times but please keep ur head up and continue to do what u r doing for these people u r a true angel and will b blessed i will pray for u and hope that soon u will find a job i always thought nobody does anything for free and thats because no one has ever done anything for me but u have made a big difference in my life just from reading you story and i thankyou for that u made me believe in something i thought was impossible thankyou and keep up the good work your blessings will come to shortly
BTW- I would like to get Anthony (#15) a pair of size 9 sneakers if he still needs them.
You are awesome Tammy! I have a couple people who have offered to give him shoes…but he probably doesn’t have use for more than a couple pair right now. However, I can ask him what else he might need. I simply love him…he is great. I will check with him and update the list.
For some reason I was not alerted when responded… Thanks for letting me know. I will keep checking the list. 🙂
For Jenny (Day 13 – #2) ~ Volunteer, Research and Work Opportunities in Africa. Please go to: http://www.isp.msu.edu/NCSA/volteer.htm
I love what you’re doing! I’m going to post your website on all my profiles and send it out in an email to as many people as I can. Please update your list of things people need. P.S. Does Oprah know about you? 😛
Carrie, you are wonderful! Thank you. I don’t know if Oprah knows about it…but I have a feeling she would like it. She seems to be a very generous person.
I too have my Master’s of Public Health and received an emailing for jobs today. I think Jenny (Day 13) could benefit. JENNY, PLEASE EMAIL ME, I have some jobs you can look at!
I will let Jenny know…I think she has found a job though very recently. I need to update the Lend a Hand page if that is true. There was another person I gave to though who was also interested in Public Health careers…I will follow up.
Reed,
Would you please update me on Jenny’s job situation. I’m new to this blog and just read Jenny’s story. I work for a USAID/AMPATH program based in Kenya and would like to help out in anyway that I can.
I absolutely love the message that you are giving people from this website and would love to help if possible.
Thanks,
Jessie
Thank you for this story of the generosity of the human heart and the results. Hope god smiles on you with an awesome job in the near future.

Hi Reed –
What you’re doing is absolutely amazing, and I’d like to be part of it in some small way. Something about Phillip’s story really touched me, and I’d like to send him clothing. Can you please tell me how I can get items to him?
Thanks,
Gina
Absolutely. Phillip is really special. I have been meaning to go visit him lately. I will follow up with you directly Gina by Monday to let you know how to get the clothes to him. Thanks!
Reed,
What an unusual approach, yet a beautiful way of giving hope to humanity. I do believe that your project will have a far greater impact than if you simply gave the total sum to just a few or even on individual.
My own family is going through an unexpected and difficult time of employment transition but we continue to do what we can for others. Our children, now 17, 19, and 21, have done a variety of things spontaneously, despite their own meager funds; among favorite vacation memories are the ones where we have been focused on helping others instead of just having fun.
Just as we are frequently blessed in unexpected ways, I’m confident that God will bless you abundantly. Perhaps not in monetary ways, but certainly via your own growth and the goodwill you are generating. I pray that more people will shift their focus away from themselves toward helping others. Your mother must be quite a woman and justifiably proud!
Blessings upon all who are participating in this project– either as donors through Reed, or as inspired to do something different.
SH
PS: It’s encouraging to note the tendency of so many to pass on what they are receiving. That’s the way we ought to be.
Quick clarification: I was unaware that your mother is deceased. My condolences. Though I believe she is not consciously aware of what you are doing, I still hold that she must have been a great woman.
On another note, I recall a great program I saw advertised in a Midwestern state. I tried to find specifics but instead found many similar. The concept was to encourage everyone to “Give 5,” of something: 5% of your funds, 5 hours a week of your time, etc. Details don’t matter nearly so much as getting the focus away from ourselves.
Jesus said, in essence, “What you did for the least significant person you did for me… What you neglected to do for the least significant person you neglected to do for me.”
Mohandas Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
By the way, I especially appreciate the tracking and your apparent non-judgmental acceptance of even those who decline or waste what you offer.
Perhaps, Reed, your next call in life is to draw on your experiences this year and become a motivational author/speaker/organizer. Admittedly, the world seems at times to have its fill, but your commitment is admirable and should be replicated.
🙂
Day 70 Rolling Mill. IS there a way to maybe put money to help buy Karin a Rolling Mill? Did she tell you what she wanted it for? IS it to help with incom? I just googled Rolling Mills and they are arond400-500 dollars. Just a thought since it is a need.
Thanks
You are right…they are not cheap. She needs it for her start up jewelry business. I can certainly help those who would like to dontate funds to her get in touch with her so that they can help her out.
Just a thought for the day:
“Change one life, you change the world entire”
Paraphrased from the Talmud:
“To save one life is as if you have saved the world”
Think about that quote today and see if it helps you want to do more good deeds than you would normally.
See alot of people think that one single person can’t do awhole, but history is full of examples of how the world has changed, sometimes for the good…. Mother Theresa,Oskar Schindler…. and sometimes for the bad….
A great example of the power of one person would be Reed here, look at what one single person has done to change alot of lives
So even though one single good deed might not chnage the world directly, it will through the person who you helped, goes on and helps someone else, who goes on and helops someone else, etc
Just a thought…
Reed – I just got this from Washington DC Connections. It seems like lots of people are looking for work, so I thought I would pass it along:
Hi Everyone!
Is there anyone out there looking for work? We have several positions available in the legal field from receptionists to contract administrators, to litigation support analysts to payroll and billing specialists.
These are excellent opportunities for candidates who have worked for a major law firm for at least one year. Great salaries, benefits and room for advancement. I am working with a very reputable law firm in DC that is incredibly stable and solid.
Please contact me if you are interested in hearing more! I look forward to assisting you or your referrals in the future!

Great! Thanks Teri…not really my area, but maybe hopefully it will help somebody reading the blog! Keep it coming!
Hello Reed:
Peace.
Great job with a great heart. One day God will reward you.
As both Prophets Jesus and Muahammad (peace be upon them all) said what you do to the least among people, you do unto those prophets.
The reward is coming up soon and it will be many times over.

Hi Reed,
I think it is awesome what you are doing!! You are an awesome person and I am sure your efforts will return to you ten-fold.
I ‘m not sure how I could, but I would love to help someone that hasn’t been helped already…I live in California, so that may be a little difficult. I added your blog to email me directly each day with new posts and I will keep checking the Lend A Hand page for updates.
Thank you for what you are doing, you make this world a better place one act of kindness at a time.

Hi,
I have a music that is in need of a good home. It’s in great shape, and I can have it out of storage this weekend, and then arrange a drop off.
I saw that others have volunteered to help with this, but if it’s still needed then I can donate it to Cleo.
I’m loving your adventures. Thanks so much for sharing your generous spirit.
CMB
I am trying to get a hold of Cleo to see if he still needs this and will get back to you! Thanks!
Hi Reed!
I wish I had the resources to play copycat! However I am not as blessed. What I would like to offer is some free computer help to anyone who is unemployed. The best way to find a job today is to go online, if you are able, and search. If your computer is on the blink then that is very difficult to do. Please give my info to anyone you meet that is in need of computer support. The only requirement is internet access, as I am able to fix the computer remotely.
Thanks Reed for being so infectious with your kindness and good will!
Barry, this is awesome! Computer trouble is a major problem sometime for the unemployed and poor. I will definitely keep you in mind. In addition, I have an idea or two that I will connect with you directly on. Thanks for your generous offer!
What a fabulous idea you have! I have a ton of clothes for a young boy (sizes 5-7) that I would love to pass on to a needy family. They are in very good condition. If you meet anyone along the way who could use them, let me know.
Also, I’ve been thinking about starting a foundation for single parents who want to buy a home but find it tough on a single income. I’d like to give out grants to help with their downpayment and closing costs. Thanks for resurrecting an idea I’ve been mulling for quite some time. I think it’s time for me to move towards making it a reality.
Kathy, I will keep my eyes open for any of my recipients who are in need of some clothing for a young boy.
Great idea for a foundation! Go for it! You can do it. Keep me posted on your progress.

I’m 73 and can’t find a job. I’m a registered nurse and the small amount of social security I get doesn’t come close to paying all my bills. I will work as a receptionist, telephone operator, can’t do the floor beat any more but still active enough to work. Some bad thoughts about ending come thru my mind as I’m so desparate and now need surgery on my back which will only put me out if commision for a couple of weeks, I anyone can use me in office please let me know Desparate in Champain Ill.
Hang in there Patty….hopefully someone in Champain, IL will see this and contact you. Good things are coming. If you ever need an ear…drop me an email. I would be happy to talk to you. Reed
Patty, As a regestered nurse, even at age 73 with a bad back, you might try to work per diem on the 11PM-7AM night shift at a nursing home. It’s wouldn’t be hard on your feet as the night nurse is responsible for some extra paper work the facility would need done. There are few meds and treatments and no family or doctors to deal with. Here in NJ, an RN per deim gets around $30 an hour which would be around $800 free and clear extra every month if you just worked one night a week.
Hey Reed,
I’m in contact with dance studios to try and help Rob Day 117. Dance Place (www.danceplace.org) says if you can attend dance classes for free if you volunteer with them. This might help Rob I will let you know if I get more information. Jennifer
I just want to say there are still good people in the world. I love what you are doing and have always did this in a different manner. It is great to see the documentation of everyone too. Keep doing what you’re doing and God will bless you. No wait, He already has! You have come in contact with so many people, it just amazes me. I plan to keep you with you and I will participate in your day of giving. Thanks so much for continuing to inspire us all. May God continu to bless you.

Hi Reed,
This year has been a very difficult year for me. I have lost 2 jobs since September 2009, have been informed by my husband he wants a divorce, and trying to support 3 children on unemployment. After reading you blog and finding out what you are doing with $10 a day while you are unemployed is amazing. I am a certified Special Education teacher, and would love to offer my assistance to any parents who need advocacy for their child with special needs. I can’t offer monies because I am struggling to get by with 4 family members to feed, cloth, and pay the bills but I can offer my time. If you know of anyone that needs assitance in or around Harrisburg PA, do not hesitate to call me.
I will add your name to my prayer list and know in my heart that God directed me to your site for a reason.
Thanks
Holly
Hey Reed,
I just read your story and thought it was amazing. As soon as i read it i came straight to your website. What you do is awsome and I would like to help if I can.. I am only 15 but I will do anything to help. If Anthony C. [Day 67], Phillip B. (Day 75), or anybody else need clothes still, let me know. I know many people that would also be willing to help.
Thanks for all you are doing.
Hi Whitney! I will email you about ways to help! You rock! -Reed
I am so touched and had tears in my eyes reading the aol article. He may not expect anything back but his Karma will be so overwhelming in one way or another. I myself am out of work with two boys not knowing what will happen with my home in the next several months but i know that i have so much to be grateful for and appreciate. And what makes me feel good is to know that things could be worse for us and that fuels me to help others when i can. For instance when i was coming off 95 in Philadelphia there is a young homeless man who sits there waiting for hand outs. I only had a $1 and jelly beans (easter) and gave them to him. He acted like i gave him a million dollars!!! it broke my heart so i went to the store and bought two bags worth of groceries and some personal products. He was the happiest person i saw that day. Its a wonderful feeling helping others and i learned from the best-my family who taught me to always give of yourself and do it because you want to do it not because you expect something back.
I wish great people like you lived near me. I am soo low that im not even sure what to do and I feel like the worst person on earth for even posting this for everyone to see but you all don’t know me so Im hope you don’t judge. Im so low that I even attempted suicide on April 11th at 7:20 a.m. and failed at failing like I like to call it. Theres only one other person in he world that knows this and im not sure that she even cares. It was my first attempt ever but ive pretty much given up on everything. I have tried soo hard for soo long and its gotten me nowhere. I feel worthless. I have no friends at all anymore. I have no car. I have no job and no matter how many applications I put in, I don’t even get a call for an interview. I haven’t had a job since February 17th, 2009 or St. Patrick’s Day. I have no college and im 22 and will be 23 in October. Basically, I have nothing. My fiance has a vehicle and gives me a free place to stay. I drive her vehicle but I feel horrible because she is roughly 2 months behind in car payments and quite possibly on the repo list but I cant do anything but sit here while she works her butt off to pay for something she cant afford while I sit in the free place she gives me. Im worthless. If only I could find a job. I may sound like a big baby since im 22 and a guy but I think im depressed at this point cause all I do is cry all day long. Please, don’t judge me for this. I figure that I can open up to you, a bunch of strangers and hopefully you wont judge me. Anyways though, the reason im posting this is not for money cause I would never ask for that from anyone even though I need it soo badly. Im just trying to find out if anyone, anywhere can help me get a job or if you know of anybody hiring or anything like that? I live in the central Illinois area and we are trying to move to Bloomington Illinois so if anybody knows of anybody hiring there or if you yourself are hiring and you can help me, and want to help me, please, please do. Some day, when I get back up on my feet again, I will return the favor to anybody who can help. If you can’t, I understand. Again, I feel horrible for even posting this so im sorry for that in advance. I just don’t know what else to do anymore.
Thank you,
Travis
Hi Travis, I am worried about you. I hope others can help you out, but I also think you need someone to talk to about what your going through. I hope that a counsellor or therapist trained in these specific issues reaches out and offers to help you pro bono. If anyone comes forward, I will be happy to put them in touch with you. I’ll write to you directly as well. Stay strong. -Reed
Travis – I am worried about you also. It sounds like you are depressed and it will be very hard for you to make positive changes if you don’t get help. You can walk into any emergency room, tell them you are depressed and suicidal and you will be treated free of charge if you do not have money or health insurance. Please do this today.
Travis, I too was severely depressed for years. Find a counselor as soon as possible. Trust me, they can help you. Also, try to do something for someone else- no matter how little, it will make YOU feel better about yourself.
I CANT TELL YOU HOW GREAT IT IS THAT YOU ARE DOING THAT I KNOW HOW YOU MUST FEEL INSIDE BECAUSE WHEN I GO THROUGH THE DRIVE UP WINDOW I TELL THE GIRL I WANT TO PAY FOR THE ORDER BEHIND ME AND SHE ASKS SOMETIMES [DO YOU KNOW HIM OR HER ] AND I SAY NO I JUST WANT TO PAY FOR THEIR ORDER . AND I DO AND I DRIVE AWAY BY THE TIME THEY GET TO THE WINDOW I HAVE ALREADY DRIVEN AWAY AND I KNOW IT MADE THEIR DAY SPECIAL FOR THAT MOMENT AND THAT IS A GREAT FEELING AND IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD AND I KNOW IT LEAVES THEM WONDERING WHY I WOULD HAVE DONE THAT AND GIVES THEM SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT SOMETHING NICE SO IF THEIR HAVING A BAD MORNING I KNOW I JUST PUT A HAPPY THOUGHT IN THEIR HEAD EVEN IF ITS FOR ASHORT TIME , ITS GREAT AND I LOVE DOING IT SO I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL
Hello Reed,
What you are doing is wonderful, every little bit helps.
I own a small catering business in Chehalis, WA about an hour south of Tacoma.
My business partners and I get frustrated because of the malevolence, lies, and greed we see in the world. We are not poor, but also are not rich by monetary means, we are rich in bounty, labor, knowledge, and of selling quality wholesome foods to a community that just thinks it is expensive, and compared to a 99 cent cheese burger a $5 sandwich is. (Nutritious foods=not spending it later in the hospital?!?)
Giving one little thing everyday is something that can mushroom cloud very easily. We do what we can to make change in the world. We donate to the food bank, we have our own farm where we grow a lot of our food, we compost, recycle, and we are active in our community to promote change, benevolence and philanthropy. It makes me think what I would do with the $10, considering what you are planing on giving away this year, is the amount of money I made last year. I am sure I would find something to do with it that would help sponsor more giving in My Community, more interaction between it’s citizens. Too many People seem to be too busy or afraid to talk to each other.
What you are doing is great, and what it will turn into I am sure will affect many people for the better.
Reed,
Fantastic of you, really. Maybe, at the end of your year, something like REACH would be a venue you’d like to help with or take on.
give it some thought …
pass it forward,
Peggy
I can easily send some clothes to Philip. I shop too much and my husband doesn’t always like what I buy. Can you email me how to send him clothes, I do not live in the area.
Thanks,
Kim
That is so kind of you Kim. I will send you an email with details! -Reed
I think what you are doing is wonderful. I am a Single Mom of 2 girls and have a broken back. I have been out of work for 2 years and try to survive off of SSD payments. Before my accident I worked 2 jobs to provide. Our government is of very little help because they say that $1600 a month is too much to get any assistance. I don’t know about anyone else, but no one wants to be on Public Assistance, but if something hits you and leaves you no choice they shouldn’t make you feel belittled!
The past couple years have been very hard. If it weren’t for awesome friends helping us at times we would be in worse shape.
The one thing I do not understand about our Country is how there are so many in need and yet we always send help elsewhere. Please don’t get me wrong I know they need help as well, but we need to take care of our own first.
I get tired of telling my girls NO all the time to the smallest requests they make…i.e. a pair of shoes, a game, clothing, etc. I pray that God will heal my back and I can earn a living again. I loved to work and felt useful, now I feel useless and helpless. Than to top everything off my Mom (RIP) dropped dead on her birthday, she was not ill or anything. She was actually on her way to her Birthday dinner and than she was gone.
My 9 year old summed it up best the other day. She said you know Mommy as hard as we have it at least we have food and a warm house. I first Thanked God for having a child with such a wonderful soul and then I cried. Everything on earth is materialistic and some of those things we need for survival, some are just luxuries.
I think one thing that would be my dream come true is to take my girls on a trip to New York. That is what I dream of and try to look forward to when things get tough. The girls have had a rough couple years with all the Dr’s, hospitals, etc. and as a Mom I just want them to have some fun for a few days and forget about illness for a while 🙂
I will do my best to give my $10 on your day to someone that needs it. Because trust me, I know there are people worse off than us. God Bless and keep you all safe! Connie
I just wanted to know if there is anyone in need of any items that have not been added to the list. I would love to help. Please let me know. I could get sometime in the next week and mail it out. Thanks
Hi Stevi, the list is up to date. If you see something that has not been marked off, it is still needed. -Reed
Reed,
Are you able to share stories of how the listed needs have been met? Thank you! Lola M
I will start to do that very soon….I just delivered some items for Anthony from Day 67. -Reed
Does Phillip [day 75] still need the items listed? I would like to send some if so. Please let me know 🙂
Hi Rachel, yes he does still need those items. Several people have said they were going to send things, but nothing has arrived for him…so your help would be greatly appreciated. I will email you directly on how to get things to him. -Reed
a good thing will be return to you with another good thing,it happens to me a few years ago.
How wonderful to focus on what we can do, rather than what we can’t. BRAVO! I live in Beavercreek (Dayton area), Ohio. I have a 13 year old grandson with HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM. He needs a tutor but his family has no financial resources to pay for this. The school system does what it can, but as it is, he won’t be prepared to make a living when he graduates. He could benefit in direction with these specifically: social skills, focus, emotional development, learning abilities. His family has no financial resources to pay for this. I would love to work out a barter in exchange for helping my grandson. If anyone in this area can offer suggestions, I would be grateful.
Hi Reed,
I would love to help Tommy (Day 155) out. Please let me know where I can send some items.
Thank you!
That is awesome Shelly. Thank you! I will follow up with you via email. -Reed
Hi Reed,
I would also like to help out Tommy. Please let me know what he is still in need of and where to mail it to. You are doing a great thing and have opened the door from many others to do good. May God continue to bless you and those around you and, best of luck to you as your job hunt continues. Thanks for the continued message of Do unto others as you would wish for them to do unto you. I find that each I look forwad to reading your blog and discovering what good I could do sometime in my day.
Thank you,
JEN
Hello Reed – I love this site. I’m inspired by it everyday.
Let me know where I can send some stuff to Anthony. Thank you.
Hi Reed,
I just came across your site, and have spent the last 2 hrs soaking up the many videos and stories that you have included here. I suspect that I have only scratched the surface!
I came across your segment on Nathan (Day 86) and wondered whether he was still driven to become a pilot. I’d love to learn more about his aspirations and dreams, as I may be able to pass on to him a whole bunch of training materials that would certainly help him on what is a tough road to follow.
All the best. How do you transition to Day 366?
Hi Mike, glad you found the Year of Giving.
Nathan is a very interesting guy. In fact, he is on my list of people to contact because I have a friend who is both a helicopter and fixed wing pilot and I was getting some information from him for Nathan. Seems quite expensive to get your licenses. My friend estimated you needed to plan on spending about $50-70,000. I was hoping it was much less and that maybe a training center nearby would consider some special pricing, etc. for Nathan.
Let me get back to you on the training materials after I check with him and see if it is something he is still pursuing.
As for Day 366, I don’t have that completely figured out…but I am working on it.
Reed
John T. (Day 114) needs a responsible, hard-working personal assistant that can be trusted to handle sensitive information. I am rebuilding my life after a terrible divorce and job loss, and am looking for extra work (this I call my new life fund). I have two degrees and currently work handling highly sensitive personal information. I am available after 3:30 daily and weekends. References are available. I don’t know if John T would be open to someone working p/t but I thought I would just offer. I worked full-time while going to college full-time and raising two children as a single parent with no child support – I even volunteered my time. Therefore, hardworking is also covered!
Many people reading this feel so inspired by what you are doing. I am also sure many of them feel like me………I really really want to help, but I can’t because I live so far away. I don’t have the expertise in the areas these people need advice. But I would love to donate something if only $10 to help you keep this going. Do you have a PayPal account or how can we donate for another day of giving?
“Phillip B. (Day 75) needs clothes. Specifically pants 38×34, size 11 shoes/boots, large shirts/sweaters/sweatshirts”
I have three pairs of men’s size 11 sneakers that are unworn and brand new. Can he use them? How can I get them to him?
Yes, I am sure Phillip can use them. I will email you how to get them to me. Thanks for lending a hand! -Reed
I’m a single mother in Georgia. I’ve been laid off for over a year and just recently exhausted all unemployment benefits. I am looking to sell several of my personal items (shoes, clothing, handbags, tv, pictures, household decorative items) to raise $600 to pay my rent this month and provide food for my son and I.
Thanks for any leads you may have.
Regards,
Michele
I would love to buy Cleo a music stand. Day #41. Please let me know how I can help. 🙂 Just joined your Facebook site!
Hi Reed….I would like to help Tommy (day 155) with a gift card to CVS. How do I get it to him ? You are AMAZING !! Have you read the book ” 29 Gifts-How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life” by CAmi Walker ? It’s great. I’ll keep helping where I can !
Jackie
HEy!
Tell Mark E to get a summer job at summer camps! there are always camps hiring for counselor positions and activities! If you have talent in ANY area (fishing, guitar, art, horsebackriding etc) you could get a job at a camp. If the camp isn’t local, that’s okay. If you can get the money together for a plane ticket, it’s free room and board and free food the duration of your summer employment AND sometimes camps reimburse you for travel. Check it out!
Suzanna should hit up the Fillmore district for some contacts and possible gigs. The Fillmore is the jazz center of SF with tons of places popping up recently because of the revival of the area. The Boom Boom Room is a great little venue for jazz.
What a great way of paying it forward! I would like to help as well. Please let me know what the most pressing need is you have found and how I can give.
Thanks Reed! You are the best!
What do you want Reed? What are you looking for? I think that your mom would be so proud of you! I bet you land a great job by doing this in a round about way. Good luck. If I get back on my feet again I will try to do the same. How cool would it be if day 365 you could pass it on to some one else and they write about it to!
Reed—I am interested in helping Tommy (Day 155) with clothes and a gift card to Giant. Let me know how I can get these items to him. Thanks for all that you are doing!
Thanks Sheri…I will email you.
Reed- I am interested in sending a CVS gift card to tommy from day 155- let me know how i can get it to him. I think what you are doing is incredible. Thank you so much for what you are doing!
Hi Reed,
I have a nice pair of 36/34 black Levi’s for Elijah (Day 185). Please let me know where to send them. Blessings, Penny
Penny, I have not written up Elijah’s blog posting yet, but you need to know that he will cut them off at the knees. Elijah does not wear shirts/shoes and only wears cut off jeans. Let me tell you he is a trip! I can’t wait to get his blog posted. I will email you in case you don’t mind your jeans ending up as cut-offs!
He may do what he wants with them. I will be happy to send. If he needs them, he’s got them.

“Nathan (Day 86) would like to change careers and become a pilot. He would like to take flight classes for either helicopters or airplanes. He could use some tips on how to go about this and any donated hours or reduced pricing as he is unemployed.”
Flying lessons are quite expensive. Lessons may be taken at most local airports though. It will cost about $120 minimum for an airplane and an instructor, or about $300 minimum for a helicopter and an instructor. Also he will be required to purchase a MINIMUM of $300 for gear. To make a career out of this he will need a minimum of a commercial pilot rating which will require over 200 hrs experience under a part 61 school. Some of that training will have to be in a complex aircraft, which will cost more money (roughly $240 per hr). With this rating he will not be able to do very much, and therefore it would be recommended that he also receive an instrument rating. With these ratings he will be allowed to do small operations such as crop dusting, banner towing, ext. If he would like to make it into an airline he will have to receive additional training toward a multi-engine rating. Beyond that, he will also be required to meet airline minimums, which at this point are over 1000 flight hours with over 100 hours multi-engine. Even after meeting all of these requirements, he will still have to work his way through small airlines before he would have a chance to make it into the majors. If he does not want to be a pilot in a major airline he could always become a flight instructor. This would only require a commercial license with a CFI certificate. If he would like to expand his opportunities he could also add on an instrument rating and then get a CFII (instrument instructor) certificate, or add on a multi-engine rating and get his MEI (multi-engine instructor) certificate, or add on a sea plane rating and he could become a CFI SES (Certified flight instructor for a single engine sea plane) , or he could add on a glider rating and become a CFI G (Glider instructor). Anyway, I hope this information helps 🙂

Intercultural Family Services Inc. is an excellent provider of a number of family services in Philadelphia. megan day 144 said she was looking for a position in maternal health or other field in Philly. I worked at IFSI a long time ago and I know that it’s a great organization. She should check out their website and definetly contact them.
Thanks for the tip….I will pass that along to Megan! -Reed
For those looking for conservation opportunities – maybe not as exciting as the Sea Shepherd – check out http://www.thesca.org – they offer internships for 15 and up and also have some paid positions as team leaders etc.

Hi Reed–
I saw that Kristen on day 346 needs baby stuff. I have a LOT of baby items, especially clothes, that I can ship to you for her. How do I get them to you?

Hello Reed & Jim M (Day 351)
I’d like to send Jim a package with his vitamins, ibuprofen, Starbucks card and my copy of “God of Small Things” (great book by the way) Please let me know where to send and I’ll get it out to him this week! Thank you … Reed your Year of Giving project is super and I’ve enjoyed reading about the great people you have met along your journey. ❤ to you, Kim.
I would also like to send Jim a Starbucks gift card. I still have your address from previous packages I’ve sent..just want to make sure it hasn’t changed 🙂 Thanks!
Rachel that is so thoughtful…address is the same.
Good to hear from you!! -Reed
Reed,
I am so excited to be able to help someone! Please pass this on to Natalie J. from day 350:
Hi Natalie!
Take them on short day trips. My dad loved to travel to the areas he used to live. I would hear all kinds of stories! Record the stories! Read them back to them, as they would love to be reminded of what they have forgotten.
Before my mom passed away, I took her & Dad on a trip with the remaining siblings to see our youngest sister. It was 3 days of laughter going and coming! So that’s another thought.
The biggest gift that you can give them is your love. Listen to them, hear them (some people listen but don’t hear), and let them remember good times.
A cheap gift would be the magazine Reminisce magazine. (www.reminisce.com) The cost is about 12.00 (maybe more) for a year. They read stories that remind them of stories from their own past! Check it out! I love it. Both my parents and grandparents are gone, but I still read the books…and subscribe.
Hope this helps. Its the simple things that matter.
Hi Reed! Wow…just found out about your project today…and have been reading your blog ALL DAY! I’m on Day 43! Wonderful, awesome…how blessed you are to have done this! I received a new MP3 player today as a bonus gift for placing an order with a company…while supplies last! Well, the supplies lasted and I received it. We are not in need of an MP3 player and I wondered who to give it to…while reading Lend a Hand that you introduce on Day 43, I found my answer! I see that Anthony (Day 67) has asked for one…is he still in need? Please let me know where to send it…I’ll keep reading and if Anthony’s no longer in need, I’m sure someone else is! God Bless you Reed…and all the recipients of Year of Giving! MERRY CHRISTMAS! Calla A. Hess
Calla, that is so thoughtful of you! I will check with Anthony and let you know. Merry Christmas to you too, Reed
Hi Reed!
I happened across Year of Giving today and I would really like to help Jim M. from Day 351. He reminded me a lot of my father, who also lived in Germany as a boy when his dad was in the Air Force. How might I go about getting things to him?
Also, I’m a senior in a sorority in Rhode Island. When I get back to school from winter break I’d love to organize a collection drive among the girls to donate what we can to help. Will there be a way to donate goods in February? I imagine it will take a few weeks once I get back to collect everything.
Merry Christmas!
Lindsay
Hi Lindsay! Thanks for checking in on the Year of Giving. I am inspired by the initiative that you are taking to organize something with your sorority. On Christmas Eve I delivered most of the items that Jim had requested, however, what he could really use right now are some Starbucks gift cards. He likes to sit inside there while it’s cold. It also gives him a chance to use the restroom, but he doesn’t like to sit inside and use their restroom if he doesn’t buy something. Perhaps you could take up a collection or throw a party and use the funds to do something for him. He has an email account too and I know would follow up with you. He’s really nice. Let me know what you think you might want to do. -Reed
It’s all too easy to turn off the TV and forget people in need. However, I am not one of those people So many Japanese children are left without their parents, and so many parents left without means to support their families anymore. They need support from the rest of the world. Not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to spare the money to donate, but any contribution that you could make would be appreciated! If you can’t donate, please keep Japan in your thoughts and pass the word around!
I really appreciate articles on your site. You’re doing a fine job! Thanks a lot. 🙂
